Dear Susan,

My attorney never calls me back. It’s not like I call him all the time, but I do expect a callback, in a day or two, not a week later.  Is this common for attorneys to do?

Dear Nina,

I get this question all the time and the answer is yes and no.  Some attorneys are very quick with return phone calls.  Others take a few days.  I think a week is pushing it.

My suggestion is to address this issue as quickly as possible.  Maybe set a weekly check-in day and time for conversation and updates.  Keep in mind that you will be charged for every minute you speak to your attorney as they earn money based on time – time spent on the phone with you, time spent responding to the other side’s (your spouse) counsel, time writing letters and filing motions in your behalf.  Knowing this, you should keep your phone time with your attorney at a minimum and only discuss matters that are urgent.

All that being said, find out what their communication method is and make a plan so that you may have your concerns addressed in a timely and cost efficient manner.
